1. A Cup of Tea

Nan-in, a Japanese master during the Meiji era (1868-1912), received a university professor who came to inquire about Zen.

Nan-in served tea. He poured his visitor’s cup full, and then kept on pouring.

The professor watched the overflow until he no longer could restrain himself. “It is overfull. No more will go in!”

"Like this cup," Nan-in said, "you are full of your own opinions and speculations. How can I show you Zen unless you first empty your cup?"

Concentration. Empty your mind.
Let the rest of the world go by.
Hold your breath. Hold your breath. Close your eyes.

Rocks and stones. Broken bones.
Everything eventually comes crawling home.
In the night. In the night.

— Laurie Anderson

the following 13 photographs and 1 video were a collaboration between ben gutmann and myself. it initially started as a humorous final project for our lighting class and is now quickly evolving into a much bigger project.

a photobooth was set up and accessible to the public with varying outfits and backdrops. we baked cookies as an incentive to get people to stand in front of our camera. we let the rest of the process be as intuitive as possible. it was very satisfying to see  people (especially the strangers) react to the whole process.

some alterations to faces were made in post processing. i couldn’t help it. it’s too much fun.

this summer, we will be traveling around texas (not the entire thing though- it’s too big) with our photobooth and will study the different types of people that decide to let us photograph them.

who knows what’ll happen.
